Title: Disabled Biker Rights
Tags:
Road Journals Entry: March 4, 2006 What does a disabled biker look like? Why is it so wrong that a disabled biker with a handicapped license plate take up one parking spot, when it's ok for a disabled car/truck driver do so? I gave an interview many years ago in a St. Petersburg, FL, newspaper regarding treatment I received at a Wal-mart in New Port Richey, FL. (1996, St. Petersburg Times) I have had handicapped plates since 1994 after passing out in a Wal-mart parking lot because it was close to 100 degrees there, and I couldn't breathe while walking from motorcycle into the store. After the ambulance ride to ER, and the doctor signing the papers the next day for the handicapped tag, I was now considered disabled. But why do I have to prove to idiots in cars that disabled people can still ride motorcycles? I would like to say I do it to piss off other drivers, but since I am just as disabled as they are I am entitled to that spot, just as well as any other driver on the road. But no, some idiot every week, still, comes up to me screaming that there is no such thing as a disabled biker, cause if I was really disabled I wouldn't be riding one. Yet this same stupid idiot is behind the wheel of a car. Wal-mart shoppers are the best for this. Why I have no clue?  It seems every WM that I have been to around the country, always has at  least ONE idiot who mentions that I can't possibly be disabled if I am on a bike. So I just lift my shirt, show my scars & tits in public, and then say the unmentionable fuck word to them. Or if someone comes to me and says "you are parked in a handicapped spot", my response is "thank you". We shouldn't have to defend our right to be disabled.  And definitely we shouldn't have to defend our rights to be disabled bikers, cause I have seen many stupid fucks in cars, who are not disabled. parking in a disabled spot, because the disabled spouse is in the store. This person can park in another spot to wait, esp. if they are picking the disabled person up at the door. The reason I called the media was to prove that not all motorvehiclists are car drivers, that bikers are entitled to the same courtesy. Not to mention the fact the healthy guy was sitting in his car, got out with a baseball bat & started swinging at my daughter and complained about me parking in a handicapped spot. I jumped off of bike, kid ran into store called the manager who called 911. When officer friendly arrived, he told ME to move my bike, cause he never heard of handicapped bikers before. So I staged a one woman biker sit in til the press arrived. And some wonder why I'm so damned rebellious!!
